Gangs are said to have originated as far back as the 1830’s (Scott). The Blood gang in particular, which has
become more and more common in the Southeastern region of the United States, originated in west Los Angeles in the mid to
late 1960’s and founded by Sylvester Scott and Vincent Owens. Their primary objective was to rid the streets from the
threat of the Crips, which are their biggest rivals. They wear red, which indicates the term “Bloods.” They are
also known as Pirus, which is the name of the street where they were formed.

Media influence and fear also play major roles when teens think
about joining a gang. The music industry often displays gang members as cool, supernatural, and most important of all, respected.
Rappers such as Lil’ Wayne, The Game, and hip-hop legend Snoop Doggy Dogg all openly admit to being affiliated
with their respected gangs.

The largest of all gangs are the Crips. Their color is blue. They originated in Los Angeles, just slightly before the
Bloods came into existence. According to writer Chad Scott, they started off as a community watch group used to slow down
the crime rate in certain neighborhoods. Tension between fellow gang members escalated into what we now call turf wars, which
are wars fought in order to gain territory. They started off as the “Piru Crib” gang, but after a few of their
members decided to turn their backs on them and become the gang called the Bloods, the Piru Cribs dropped the name Piru and
turned the “b” in crib upside down, symbolizing the downfall of the Blood gang (Scott). This is how the gang Crips
came into existence.
